That's sudden. [ and stupid? didn't you just say someone was murdered? what if you're rooming with the killer. you're a bad cop, aren't you? ]

[ he doesn't deal with homicides he doesn't need to worry about murderers. simple enough. ]

You're fishing for an invite?

[ yes there will be one. whether Sam wants it or not. ]

[ heads back inside and holds the door open for her. ]

[ what a dumbass logic. ]

Hey, there's not much to do around here. [ she laughs and follows him inside, hands in the parka's pockets ] Besides, do I have to fish for one when I'm already here doing this huge favour to you?

I said I'd buy you a drink.

[ laughs. consider yourself invited. ]

[ she does. makes a little fist pump just to joke and calls the elevator, but since they were the last people to use it, it's already is. she walks inside and presses the floor's button again to go pick up his mess ]

Yeah, the Black Lodge owner, Harriet? I met her back in Elkins. Do you ever go there?

[ that's the right word for it. mess. ]

Heard of it, but haven't been there yet. I guess my brother often meets his drinking buddies up there.

[ it's a classy place. he prefers places with younger people in it. ]

She's supposed to be nice.

I liked it. It's spiffy. [ she follows him out of the elevator towards said mess and waits for him to point out whatever box he wants her to pick up next. might be an order to his messy ways, even if she highly doubts it ] I thought she was. [ very nice. great kisser. 10/10. ]

What about Elkins? Any place good to visit?

[ wowow. there's no order so he just waves his hand and picks a box in random. even he's not sure what's in it. it's one of those boxes he hasn't opened since he filled them like two moves ago. they just travel with him. ]

I'll let you know once I've settled in better. Most of those places wouldn't let me in back in the old days.

[ she thought as much. the closest box is picked up and she has to make a little effort because it's a little heavier than the previous one, but doesn't complain ]

[ exits the door before she can come up with a comeback. ]

I can see that. [ says it anyway and nods in a serious way. it's not serious at all. she's mocking him and his baby face. it's a friendly mocking. we're friends now. ]

[ instead of going straight to the elevator he's standing in the hallway, apparently wondering about something. ]

Do you think they have those dinner elevators here? You know, those mini elevators for food? It's a relatively old hotel.

How should I know? [ she's literally just arrived. ] Haven't you been living here? [ she's assuming by the amount of shit he has laying around ]

But it shouldn't really matter, since you're moving out?

Yeah but you are the firefighter. Doesn't knowing this stuff fall in with your job description?

[ knowing the layout of the place, what way the smoke might travel, etc. ]

No, it won't matter tomorrow, but it kind of matters right now. I'd like to find one.

[ she gets the heavy box into the van and dusts her hands off, setting them on her hips as she gives him a really? look. but who is she but an enabler and also an adrenaline junkie? nobody. might be fun anyway. maybe she can squeeze his lanky ass inside it ]

[holding a couple paper accordion files under one arm, and a carpet bag under the other. on his way out to the van, having finally got his notes together. addressing ben, but he's looking at the woman.]

[ they could put the boxes in it. ]

[ she tilts her head in mild surprise, not expecting sam, but once ben starts talking and introducing, she smiles and shakes his hand in greeting ] What's up? [ like saying hi, not really asking, and she returns her hands to her pockets

she looks over to ben and back to sam with an amused smile, a little bit rascal in nature ]

Yeah, we're on a hunt.

[shoves his carpet bag in the back of the van, then carefully sets the accordion files on top of it, so he can shake nicola's hand.]

A dumbwaiter? You're on a hunt for a dumbwaiter?

[ excuse him for not knowing since he's not from the 1920s. ]

[he found it on one of the walks around the hotel he'd made himself take after he realized he'd been standing in the middle of the room staring at the wall for fifteen minutes. incidentally it won't hold an adult's weight. He asked. It seemed like an important question but the maid had been a little alarmed.]

and then she does a little mock salute when ben nods at her ]

[pockets his hands and raises his eyebrows. That was all of the stuff he brought here in that one bag and two folders. He's got nothing better to do now.]
