and she understands his desire to tell darla-- why wouldn't she? it's been a rift between the two of them for years, part of the reason he's had to distance himself from her. he has to come to chloe to talk about this nonsense instead of his own wife. she was very on the page of no secrets between spouses... but there was always a reason to keep certain things hidden. ]
You can't. [ that she's for sure on. ] You and me? We're barely tolerated because of our positions. Darla? I don't think they need any spatulas.
[ there's a pause. reluctance. she turns her head away from him to look at the food. it's less likely to get her to change her opinion. ] Your family was used once to get at you. They wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

What makes you think she's any less of a target not knowing? [maybe she'd be better equipped to deal with it. but it's a half-hearted protest, he's already caving. the status quo is secret-keeping, and he's never been much of a status quo changer. he wants to be, especially after bela's death, wants nothing more than to turn it all on its head and drag it out into the light but he's scared and, honestly, doesn't have enough influence anywhere to change anything anyway]
no subject
[ she's not like either of them-- darla will keep poking at it until it explodes. he knows that. look at her now. even if she didn't talk about it with adam previously, would she still have went on her own to investigate bela's death? more than likely. ]
There's nothing I want more than for you to tell her, Adam. But it's for her own good not knowing.
no subject
I'll. [makes a useless gesture with his hands before dropping them back to the fence and worrying at the splintered plank.] Talk to her. [or something. he has no idea how to turn darla off the path. of course he has ways of derailing investigations that get too close, he's devoted the better part of his police career to it, but it feels wrong to use the same tactics on his own wife. well, more wrong than straight up lying to her about who killed their daughter, which is pretty fucking wrong by itself]
Ok, tell me again why you don't have a guy out here slaving over this for you? [indicates the fence mess with a finger circle. we're moving on because she succeeded in talking him out of ever having an honest relationship with his wife good job best friends forever and they don't need to devote any more time to his horrible home life so they can talk about her lack of one]
no subject
Because I can do it on my own? [ a weak answer. but it's true. it's not hard. he's a wimp. ] I don't know. I guess I don't make myself available enough. I haven't been on a date in years.
[ these west virginian's aren't too into the witchy thing, apparently. oh, they'll come to her for a tarot card reading but dating? off limits! besides, why would she want to invite anyone into her life? she doesn't want to end up like adam. no offense. ]
no subject
I suppose dating's the last thing on anyone's mind in the middle of all this. [he'll give her the benefit of the doubt. take it. you're not just a sad single loser who's going to die alone with her tarot cards you're Busy.] Speaking of, Darla's hobby's not the only thing I wanted your piece on.
[more work no play makes adam a tired boy]
no subject
[ this apology lunch is starting to become heavy. can something not be tainted? she goes back for the beer before she encourages him to continue. ]
Well, spit it out. [ she hasn't got all day. no, she totally does. adam could stick around and distract slash talk to her forever. ]
