CHAPTER 1
NOV 1ST | 58℉☂
▸ In a sad turn of events during last night's activities, local teenager Bela Gage was found dead at Gainsbourg Resort as festivities were wrapping up. Local authorities have opened up an investigation regarding the circumstances around her death.
▸ Several houses were egged in height of last night's events. Locals are offering a small reward to anyone with information that may lead to identification of the culprits.
▸ Now for the weather, expect light showers from late morning to mid afternoon. Blackwell is expecting the storm to keep rolling through overnight, so drive safe!
▸ That's the News In today. Now back to your regularly scheduled tunes. This one goes out to the Gages, may you find peace in these difficult times.
THE RISING IS NOT IN EFFECT

[it's actually a good bet for him because cole would only be caught dead here if he had pretenses to hold up and he doesn't feel like he can look him in the face today. he stops at one of those little dorky halloween themed displays, mostly cleaned out already, one earbud in playing some morose affair with a slow tempo when he spots cypress and her pickles. he immediately ducks back around the corner hoping she was too enthralled with pickle jars to notice. of course in the process of avoiding cole he'd run into the other last person ever he wants to deal with today]

Micah. Just the person I wanted to see.
no subject
What did I do now?
no subject
[ cypress finally looks over at him, leaning against the front bar of the cart. ]
I just wanted to invite you and your brother over for dinner, I haven't heard from you in a while and I want to know what you've been up to. [ a beat. ] You didn't make it to my party.
[ it's said in that way that she knows exactly what he and cole did, but in her usual sickly sweet tone. she turns from him at the end of her sentence, having no need to see his expression as she bends over to grab something from the shelf. ]
no subject
Sorry? [he screws his face up in confusion, fishing for whatever she wants to hear. he's been raised with psychopaths he's pretty used to apologizing first and asking why later]
no subject
[ cypress drops a can of green beans into the cart when she's done speaking, turning away from him again. ]
Are you aware of what Cole's favorite meal is?
[ nonchalantly, like it's not strange that she's asking. ]
no subject
I don't know, fried chicken? [if there was ever any doubt that they hail from hillbilly central. he even has a little appalachian lilt to the way he says it. he wants to ask what she means by it, what's done is what now. since when does she take issue with his extra curricular activities. but he's not about to get into it in the middle of a piggly wiggly, so he goes along with her nonchalant attempt at conversation that's not disturbing at all] I don't know what he's doing tonight though.
[don't make him responsible for cole's whereabouts, that boy doesn't know what don't shoot the messenger means]
no subject
And you, Micah? Fried chicken?
no subject
Huh? [these things tend to happen when you're busy texting and not listening] I guess, yeah. [he has no idea what she asked. just nod and smile]
no subject
We really need to do things like this more often anyway. We are family, after all. We should always be on the same page.
no subject
Say that louder. I don't think the bag boys heard you. [ok it's not like she yelled it but he's twitchy about his cover being blown. for a lot of reasons besides the most obvious.]
no subject
You really are not in any position to freak out at me. [ ever. at all. ] Besides, no one shops now. They're getting ready for the football game tonight. You and Cole should go.
no subject
What? [looks up again. trailing behind her with his face in his phone like a duckling.] Why? I've never gone before.
[it'd look weird if he was suddenly interested. look at him he weighs like 2 pounds soaking wet why would he ever want to get invested in a sport that would break him apart if someone looked at him sideways]
no subject
[ cypress lets out a laugh, leaning back to push her cart down another aisle. she sets a loaf of bread in the top seat part of the cart. ]
It could be a topic we discuss at dinner, outlets for you and your brother. Since you seem to need them. You get into trouble otherwise.
no subject
I've only done what I've been told.
[side eyes her as she continues her shopping while casually discussing the next direction his life should take. it would sound like any concerned family member if it weren't for the fact that she's probably not even capable of concern and barely family. either way, the way she keeps picking at the idea that he done fucked up but won't tell him how or why is starting to irritate him into defensiveness]
no subject
[ she's well aware that micah would never step out of line. her anger isn't toward him. regardless, he isn't her favorite cousin and she isn't going to treat him as such. ]
But your brother seems to think it is okay to do otherwise.
no subject
[at least she's finally getting to her point, although it makes him squint in suspicious confusion. he doesn't know what she's getting at or if she's playing with him, but cole just said he had no idea what she would be referring to, and he'd take his word over hers.]
What are you talking about?
no subject
[ sets some fruity pebbles down in there. stop thinking about squishing her bread, micah. it's not polite. ]
You can go now if you'd like. [ a beat. ] I'll see you and your brother tomorrow at seven o'clock.
no subject
[he lingers for a moment, contemplating asking her what exactly she's implying, but the offer to not be around her any more is more tempting than the answers, so he steps around her with an uncertain look and pulls his headphones back up to drown out the piggly wiggly ambience. if she's not going to tell him and cole says nothing is wrong, he guesses he'll just have to find out tomorrow. which is kind of like knowing you're in trouble but not actually being called in to the principles office for hours. horrible mostly. thanks.]
